Holiday Hosting Plumbing Tips: What to Check Before Guests Arrive

Before holiday guests arrive, check your kitchen drains, garbage disposal, bathrooms, water heater, plumbing connections, and main water shutoff valve. A few simple checks can help you catch problems before increased cooking, cleaning, showers, and toilet use put more pressure on your plumbing.

Pre-Holiday Plumbing Checklist

  • Test kitchen and bathroom drains.
  • Run the garbage disposal.
  • Flush every toilet.
  • Check faucets and showers.
  • Confirm that the water heater works reliably.
  • Look for visible leaks.
  • Locate the main water shutoff valve.

Check the Kitchen Drain

Holiday cooking sends more water and food waste through the kitchen drain. If the sink already drains slowly, smells unpleasant, gurgles, or backs up, additional use could turn a partial blockage into a complete clog.

Keep grease, cooking oil, coffee grounds, bones, eggshells, rice, pasta, and fibrous scraps out of the sink. Let grease cool, seal it in a container, and place it in the trash. A sink strainer can catch smaller scraps before they enter the drain.

Test the Garbage Disposal

Run the disposal with cold water and listen for humming, grinding, or rattling sounds. Water should continue draining normally while the unit operates.

Feed suitable scraps into the disposal gradually rather than all at once. Never place your hand inside the unit, even when it appears to be off. A disposal that hums without grinding, leaks beneath the sink, smells persistently, or causes a backup may need professional service.

Prepare Guest Bathrooms

Flush every toilet and make sure the bowl clears properly. Watch for weak flushing, recurring clogs, water around the base, or a toilet that continues running after the tank refills.

Test bathroom sinks, tubs, and showers for slow drainage and normal water pressure. Check beneath sinks for dampness, stains, or musty odors.

Place a lined wastebasket near each toilet so guests have somewhere to discard wipes, paper towels, and personal care products. Only toilet paper should be flushed.

Make Sure the Water Heater Is Ready

More guests usually mean more showers, dishes, laundry, and hot-water use. Make sure the water heater provides consistent hot water and recovers normally after use.

Unusual noises, rusty water, fluctuating temperatures, leaks, or hot water running out sooner than expected may signal a problem. These signs should be inspected before the unit faces heavier holiday demand. Leave gas, electrical, and pressure-related adjustments to a qualified professional.

Look for Plumbing Leaks

Check under sinks, around toilets, near the water heater, and along visible pipe connections. Look for dripping water, corrosion, damp cabinets, soft flooring, water stains, and musty odors.

Small leaks can become more disruptive when fixtures receive heavier use. If you find moisture but cannot identify the source, have it inspected before guests arrive.

Locate the Main Water Shutoff Valve

Make sure you and another responsible person in the home know where the main shutoff valve is located. Individual shutoff valves may also be found beneath sinks and behind toilets.

If a fixture overflows or a pipe begins leaking, shutting off the nearest working valve can help limit water damage. Avoid forcing a valve that is stuck or heavily corroded.

Prepare Your Plumbing for Holiday Guests

Schedule service if drains repeatedly clog, toilets frequently back up, hot water is unreliable, or leaks continue. Several slow drains, sewage odors, sudden low water pressure, and water near electrical equipment need prompt attention.
